The AuTrain Songbird Trail offers a new way to
identify birds. There are all sorts of guides out there for telling one bird from
another, but now you can learn them by their songs. |
The best time to hear the woodland concert is in the morning when the birds are most
active, but you can walk the trail any time of the day. You can rent a kit which
contains a guide book, a tape and tape player, and binoculars. Play the tape and you
will be guided through the trail while listening to the twenty birds it features.
The kits can be picked up at the A & L Grocery, the Au Train Grocery, or the Friends
and Food Restaurant in Au Train. There is a $10 deposit; $8 is refunded when you
bring the kit back. The remaining $2 is used to maintain the equipment. |
From atop the observation platform (located near the trailhead) overlooking Buck Bay, you
can see ducks, shorebirds, otters and perhaps even an eagle or osprey. |
To find the trail, head south on H-03 (Forest Lake Road) from M-28. Travel through
the village of Au Train for 4.5 miles and turn east onto FR-2276. You will see a
Hiawatha National Forest Recreation Area sign at this intersection. Go .5 mile to
the next sign and turn left (stay on the pavement) until you enter the campground.
Take the first campground loop to the right and you will find the trailhead near campsite
#11.
