snow and amount of slush, it appears the Spring Thaw may be
underway. Above, swans rest and preen at the mouth of the Au

Below, a deer skampers
down Perry Road during my morning walk.

Quickly, then, he jumped to his feet and paced around his studio.
He sat before his present canvas. It was a painting of a field
of grass, with a road going through it and a haystack. The
problem with this pleine aire style was that there was the
devil of a lot of painting to do. Monet had been talking to
him about painting ordinary things like haystacks, only he said he
didn't know how to do it yet. He hoped Monet would be pleased
when he showed him that it was possible even now to paint a
haystack. It really did look like a haystack. It was a
damned good haystack. One any cow would be happy to eat.
He'd even put in some single blades of hay with a tiny brush and
some kind of brown paint.
