they wanted Perry Como
---------------------

It was a beautiful
sunny day in Ishpeming, Michigan to watch ski jumping at Suicide
Hill during the 116th Annual Continental Cup competition.
Unfortunately, the temperature was -4 degrees! I spent a
couple of hours outdoors watching ski jumpers from around the world
fly off of the hill. I climbed the landing hill to see the
view that ski jumpers enjoy after flying off of the take-off ramp.
Then, I climbed about halfway up the take-off ramp before I suddenly
realized that a slip would likely lead to death. So, heart
pounding and adrenaline rushing, I gingerly made my way back down to
the ground. High winds forced the cancellation of round two
just before 3 p.m. However, I was lucky enough to see
Germany's Ferdinand Bader set a new hill record of 102 meters!

"The whole
thing was just a big false front that was just suffocating and so
dreary and depressing . . . They just wanted this thing that was
just tight and unthreatening and flat and they wanted a dull
lifestyle. They wanted Perry Como and this Ozzie and Harriet
shell that we grew up in. The whole thing had this kind of
creepy, nightmarish, grotesque quality to it."
R. Crumb,
talking about Post World War II America,
from the documentary motion picture "Crumb."
