White-hot streams of
liquid iron once ran across this area. The molten iron flowed
through channels and into sand moulds where it hardened into bars.
These bars were called "pigs" because the rows of channels and bars
looked like suckling pigs laying next to their mother. Bay
Furnace was built in 1870 and abandoned in 1877. The USDA
Forest Service stabilized the remaining ruins in 1992 to prevent
additional damage.
