flame-retardant plastic pines
---------------------

Today's photo, taken
by our webcam on the east shore of Au Train Lake, tells it all.
Shorter days, cooler temperatures, and rainy weather are making it
more and more difficult for the leaves to stay on the birch trees.

Time-honored practices often start by happenstance and blossom into
historical permanence without warning: one winter solstice, a druid
drags a bush into his hut; 2,000 years later, Wal-Mart is selling
flame-retardant plastic pines.
