Come on, feel the silence
---------------------

At the end of a busy
day, I drove my middle daughter to Au Train Bay to see how the
sunset was going to turn out. Several tourists also joined us
to view a pretty good sunset.

Ugly noises pollute our world.
In his book A Century of
Recorded Music (Yale University Press, 2000), Timothy Day
estimates that nearly 70 per cent of the sounds that fill our
environment are “technological” noise — emanating from
machines, traffic, etc.
In the tribal communities of prehistory, Day
suggests, perhaps five per cent of the acoustic environment
was composed of
technological sounds, such as swords and
ploughshares. The rest were natural,
healthy sounds: water, wind, animals, us.
