they thought I was nuts
---------------------

This slightly-out-of-focus photograph shows
various members of my extended family before I was born. The
picture shows my great grandparent's magical porch on their house in
West Terre Haute, Indiana. Years later, I would also sit on
this porch with my great grandfather (sitting on the left end of the
swing to the right of the porch column) watching him hand roll
cigarettes with his Prince Albert tin tobacco and OCB rolling
papers, and listening to him tell jokes and stories. Between
cigarettes, he would also indulge in Days Work plug chewing tobacco.
He was in his 80's before the tobacco killed him.

I took the twins
on our annual pilgrimage to the Holmquist Feed Mill in Trenary,
MI to see the baby chicks. In addition to chicks, the
twins saw some very young ducklings and turkey poults.

| Holmquist Feed
Mill is a real U.P. treasure. The sights and smells of the the old
feed mill provide an excellent contrast to strip malls and commercial
corridors. |

When I was in a deli in Hartford, they
thought I was nuts. They couldn't fathom how I could put tomatoes on a
hot dog.
