"I kind of lifted up my foot."
---------------------

On our way back from a field trip to Marquette,
we stopped at the Laughing Whitefish River to take some photographs
of autumn color. To our delight, an adult bald eagle soared
into sight and I was able to snap this photo as it landed on the top
of the evergreen tree!
In case you
missed it, here's

"Something just happened," he said; "hasn't ever
happened before in all the years I've been around outdoors, hunting,
and shooting and like that. I was in the orchard, and I kept
hearing a little squeal - more of a squeak like, right close.
I looked down, and what do you think? I had the toe of my shoe
on the back legs of a little mite of a rabbit. He was kind of
looking up at me and squeaking and pulling. Did you ever hear
anything like that? I certainly should have killed him," he
said sternly, picking up his hoe. "They're bad things around a
place like this."
"What
did you do?" breathed one of the children.
"Well," said Mr. Lovelace, looking off towards the tomatoes, "I kind
of lifted up my foot."
