the fair was at some
distance
---------------------

Today was Youth
Day at the U.P. State Fair and we all field-tripped to
Escanaba. In this photograph, my son and nephew show us all
why a trip to the fair is such a special event! We enjoyed the
perfect weather, wonderful company and exotic food.

The fair was at some
distance, and we decided to make an excursion of it. Jennie
packed a picnic lunch, a ceremony she much enjoyed. Besides
the mainstay of the meal, there were always many neatly wrapped
little packages tucked into nooks and crannies. To the
children these surprise packages were almost as exciting as a
Christmas stocking, and I always marveled at her ingenuity and never
spoiled the illusion even when I recognized their origin: the
breakfast prunes, now stuffed with a tasty mixture of cream cheese
and individually wrapped in waxed paper, the ends of each package
twisted and fringed, making it look like a motto; the lone dill
pickle, now in dainty little bunches of julienne strips; the half
cantaloupe, trimmed into slim pink crescents accented with a few
shreds of chipped beef. While Jennie was accomplishing this we
shined up the "new" station wagon - new only in the sense
that it was new to us. The dogs whimpered and looked dejected,
sure that we were leaving forever. I think they had a
premonition that this was to be a momentous day.
