Now, in our third summer of operation, I really have to come to terms
with business goals and what
we
hope to achieve with the resort. I am torn between slowly and
systematically dismantling the place and creating Michigan Kev's Kind
of a-lot-o Yurts in its place, or preserving a time-honored American
institution, the Mom and Pop resort known as Dana's Lakeside
Resort.
After especially stressful weeks, when some guests are perhaps not as
courteous or respectful of the rights and property of others as they
might be, I occasionally get the idea to lease the cabins to
interesting artists and create another time-honored American institution, Michigan
Kev's Up North Artists Colony.
As an
artists colony, I could preserve the look and feel of the old
resort and surround myself with interesting and eccentric visual artists,
sculptors, potters, weavers, etc. In addition to lease income, I
could skim a percentage of all sales.
Sometimes, like when I'm cleaning the third boat this summer used by
guests that have used their own motor and gas container and I find the
entire floor of the boat covered with outboard motor fuel, that's
what I think about.
Sometimes, when I rake the beach and find that the foundation of the
week's major sand castle project consists of fist-sized boulders and
assorted rocks and I have to spend thirty minutes digging them out and
repairing the beach, that's what I think about.
Sometimes, when I hear from the cleaning crew that they entered a cabin
only to find another sink full of dirty dishes, that's what I think about.
Sometimes...
