Lurking Chaos

When the resort is in full swing, Fridays always seem to be a little melancholy.  Some guests are at vacation's end.  There is always some half-hearted packing.  The children are already anticipating parting with friends from previous years and the new friends found earlier in the week.  Watching all of this rekindles memories and feelings that haven't surfaced since my church camp days many years ago.

We have had our share of rain this week and the temperature is decidedly cooler today.  Tomorrow, everything starts over again as new guests arrive.  There are a couple of families staying for a second week, so the transition will be a little less traumatic.  It's hard to believe another week has passed so quickly.

This snapping turtle visited Dana's beach for the third year in a row to lay her eggs.  This year we noticed a couple of rectangles painted on her shell that were not there last year.  We assume she has been "tagged" by the DNR, but we're not certain.  She was at Dana's last year on June 10, 1999.  Her eggs should hatch in early September according to what we observed last year.

"People need to be reminded that the world is unsafe and unpredictable, and at a moment's notice, they could lose everything, like that.  I do it to remind them that chaos is always out there, lurking beyond the horizon."
