Cezanne's Lesson
---------------------
We finally received some
rain last night. It was humid and cool this morning. You
could really smell the northwoods.

Tyler,
one of our young guests, caught one of the largest Walleyes
I've seen. Tyler's Walleye measured 29 inches and
weighed 9 pounds!

Telecommuting from the yurt is
working out very well. Here's a picture from my office chair looking
up through the clear plastic dome at the top of the yurt. It's a
porthole to the universe.

The
fishermen were out in force this evening. They really
like to drift and troll just off the shore from Dana's
Lakeside Resort.

I took this picture on
Tuesday, June 6th. I was drawn to the strong contrasts. The
division of the picture between the dark foreboding shapes and shadows on
the left, and the soft impressionistic sky and almost pointillist surface
of the water on the right.

My birthday was a little
over a week ago. Now, I realize that I can't even observe a
photograph anymore without in-depth analyses of the composition, symbolism, technique and cultural
context of each piece.
Nothing is simple
anymore.
When I observe my
beautiful, innocent, five year old twin sons, I can sometimes
glimpse little snippets of reality that are not limited or
constrained by words. It seems a little harder, a little more
difficult, with each passing birthday. There is a price to be
paid for reading too many books.

"It's not what the artist does that counts, but what he is... What
forces our interest is Cezanne's anxiety - that's Cezanne's lesson..."
- Pablo Picasso
