Toll on
the Grounds
It was very warm today, easily
reaching 50 degrees. It started out with the threat of rain but we
enjoyed full sunshine this afternoon.

I took
the twins into Munising to get some groceries and take a few
photographs. I took a few photos of the Munising American Legion
Post that burned down last weekend. |
They had extinguished a small fire at
the Legion on Saturday and sometime early Sunday morning it broke
out again and burned it to the ground. It was an important
community gathering place, used for wedding receptions, bingo and
benefit breakfasts. They had recently stored some fireworks in
the attic for the upcoming millennial fireworks celebration.
Firefighters were hitting the deck dodging rockets while trying to
fight the fire!
I fear my one car per cabin parking
policy has alienated some guests. I like to think that my
stance on safety outweighs the penalty of lost rentals. I may
have to temper my no-holds-barred resistance. I could end up
with the ultimate safe resort - one with no guests!
I do know for certain that the influx
of trucks and four wheel drive vehicles has really taken a toll on
the grounds. The fragile patches of grass in front of some of
the cabins are all but destroyed. There are ruts and skidmarks
everywhere. Landscape timbers that we use for outlining
parking spaces have been repositioned by trucks driving over
them.
